GST registration across multiple States or Union Territories has become easier with the introduction of the new “Multistate Registration” facility on the GST Common Portal.

The facility, introduced by GSTN on October 1, 2026, allows eligible taxpayers to initiate registration for multiple States/UTs under the same PAN through a single process, reducing repetitive data entry and simplifying the registration workflow.

For businesses expanding across multiple locations and for CA firms handling GST registrations—the new functionality can save time and make the overall process more streamlined.

What is the GST Multistate Registration Facility?

Previously, taxpayers requiring GST registration in multiple States/UTs had to provide common registration information separately for each application.

With the new Multistate Registration functionality, taxpayers can select multiple States/UTs at the beginning of the registration process and provide common information once.

The facility is currently available only for Normal Taxpayers.

How Does Multistate Registration Work?

The process can be broadly understood in four steps:

1. Select Multiple States/UTs

A new “Multistate Registration” tab is available on the GST Common Portal.

The taxpayer can select all the States/UTs where GST registration is required.

Once the States/UTs are selected, a Master TRN is generated.

2. Submit Common Registration Information

Using the Master TRN, the applicant can provide the Common Registration Information (CRI).

This includes information such as:

  • Business details
  • Promoter/Partner details
  • Authorised Signatory
  • Authorised Representative
  • Goods and Services

The Master TRN must be submitted within 15 days.

3. Individual TRNs Are Generated

After the Common Registration Information is submitted, an individual TRN is generated for each selected State/UT.

The common information already provided through the CRI is automatically populated in the respective applications.

Importantly, this information remains editable if changes are required.

4. Complete State-Specific Details

The applicant then needs to provide information specific to each State/UT, including:

  • Principal Place of Business (PPoB)
  • Additional Place of Business (APoB)
  • State-specific information
  • Aadhaar authentication

This completes the information required for the individual State/UT registration applications.

What Are the Benefits?

The biggest advantage of the new facility is reduced repetitive data entry.

For businesses operating in multiple States, the same business and promoter-related information no longer needs to be entered separately for every registration application.

Key benefits include:

Less repetitive work
Common information is entered once through the CRI.

Faster registration preparation
The workflow can reduce the time required to prepare multiple State registrations.

Better efficiency for CA firms
Professionals managing registrations for multi-state businesses can streamline their registration workflow.

Reduced data-entry effort
Automatically populated common information reduces the need to repeatedly enter the same details.

Simplified multi-state expansion
Businesses expanding into additional States/UTs can benefit from a more structured registration process.

What Information Still Needs to Be Provided Separately?

Although common information is carried forward, each State/UT application still requires certain state-specific details.

These include:

  • Principal Place of Business
  • Additional Places of Business
  • State-specific information
  • Aadhaar authentication

Therefore, the new facility does not eliminate the need for individual State/UT applications. Instead, it simplifies the common-information portion of the process.

What Does This Mean for CA Firms?

For CA professionals and tax practitioners, the new functionality can be particularly useful when handling GST registrations for businesses operating across multiple States.

Instead of repeatedly entering the same business and promoter information for every State, firms can complete the common information once and then focus on the State-specific requirements.

This can help CA firms:

  • Reduce manual data entry
  • Improve workflow efficiency
  • Minimise repetitive work
  • Handle multi-state registrations more systematically
  • Spend more time on review and compliance rather than repetitive form filling

Important Points to Remember

Before using the facility, taxpayers and professionals should keep the following points in mind:

  • The facility is currently available only for Normal Taxpayers.
  • Multiple States/UTs can be selected through the new Multistate Registration tab.
  • A Master TRN is generated after selecting the States/UTs.
  • The Master TRN must be submitted within 15 days.
  • Individual TRNs are generated after submission of the Common Registration Information.
  • Common information is auto-populated into the individual State/UT applications.
  • State-specific information and Aadhaar authentication still need to be completed separately.

The Bigger Picture

The introduction of Multistate Registration is another step toward making GST registration more efficient for businesses operating across India.

By allowing common registration information to be captured once and reused across multiple State/UT applications, GSTN aims to reduce repetitive data entry and make the registration process easier for taxpayers.

For CA firms, this can also mean a more efficient way to manage multi-state registration assignments and reduce unnecessary manual effort.

As GST processes continue to become more technology-driven, adopting efficient digital workflows can help CA firms manage compliance work more effectively.
