GSTN has released an important advisory regarding upcoming enhancements in the e-Way Bill (EWB) portal as part of its continuous efforts to improve compliance, data accuracy, and operational efficiency.

Proposed Enhancements in the EWB Portal

1. Mandatory “Ship-To GSTIN” in Bill-To Ship-To Transactions

GSTN proposes to make the “Ship-To GSTIN” mandatory in Bill-To Ship-To transactions. This enhancement is aimed at improving the traceability of goods movement and ensuring better accuracy in transaction records.

This will help:

  • Improve transparency in goods transportation
  • Reduce mismatches in GST records
  • Strengthen compliance monitoring
  • Ensure accurate reporting in EWB transactions

2. Introduction of EWB Closure Functionality

A new EWB Closure functionality is also proposed, allowing taxpayers to voluntarily close active e-Way Bills in specific cases where the movement of goods is cancelled or not completed.

This feature is expected to help businesses:

  • Maintain accurate EWB records
  • Avoid unnecessary active EWBs
  • Improve reconciliation and tracking
  • Manage logistics operations more efficiently

Action Points for Taxpayers & Businesses

Businesses, transporters, and ERP/software providers are advised to:

  • Review their current EWB workflows
  • Make necessary system or API changes
  • Prepare internal teams for the upcoming updates
  • Stay updated with GSTN announcements regarding implementation timelines

These enhancements are expected to strengthen the GST ecosystem by improving transparency, operational control, and compliance efficiency for taxpayers and stakeholders.
